        Smartphone photos to simplify Web searches

        Microsoft is researching a way to simplify mobile Web searches using images captured with a mobile phone's camera, eWEEK reports. Email a photo of what you're searching for to a designated address, and "Photo2Search" returns Web pages with information about the objects in the photo, or sites with similar images.




        "The goal of the research is to augment the usual text inquiries a search engine processes with the details captured by photos. That combination makes for much more useful search results, according to Microsoft," eWEEK's Ben Charny writes. "Microsoft is also building link between its search engine and the billions of people that now own cell phones, and the growing number of those devices that contain cameras."
