In this guest column, David Wood, co-founder and executive vice president of research at Symbian, explains why increasingly powerful and useful smartphones are beginning to proliferate. Noting the different categories of devices that smartphones are likely to supersede -- such as music players, games consoles,...

messaging terminals and digital cameras -- Wood suggests that "all this functionality will be held together and enhanced by the low-cost high-performance core computing intelligence at the heart of a smartphone."

Wood adds that this "unprecedented convergence [will bring] multiple opportunities for ground-breaking new products and services arising from the overlaps of previously separate devices."

Symbian currently enjoys a 69 percent market share in the "smart mobile device" OS market, according to a recent Canalys report.
