While wandering the exhibitor aisles at Embedded DevCon, we were drawn to this slick looking reference design board in the Freescale (formerly Motorola Semiconductor) booth. The Portable Media Player Reference Design, a.k.a.

"Jazz", runs Windows CE and is compliant with Microsoft's Portable Media Center (PMC) standard, according to Freescale.

Jazz uses a Freescale i.MX21 ("MX" stands for "Media eXtensions") processor based on the ARM926EJ-S core. Specifications of the Jazz reference design board include:
        • 15/20/30 gigabyte 1.8-inch hard drive (see picture of back, to the right)
        • 64MB SDRAM plus 64MB Flash memory
        • 3.5-inch 320x240 16-bit color LCD
        • Stereo decode, FM radio receiver
        • TV output support in PAL and NTSC formats
        • Push-button based user interface
        • USB 2.0, Ethernet, and UART interfaces
        • UAT/JTAG/Ethernet for development and debugging
According to Freescale, the i.MX21 processor's ARM926 core provides native security and accelerated Java support in addition to highly integrated system functions.

Freescale says its i.MX family processors address the needs of smartphone and portable products, by virtue of their intelligent integrated peripherals, advanced processor cores, and power management capabilities.
