HTC's large stable of Windows Mobile smartphones has gained yet another filly. The HTC S640, aka "HTC Iris," features a touchscreen display and full-QWERTY keyboard, along with a "soft-touch rubber" finish and rocker-style soft keys, according to the company.

A Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional device, the S640 is initially being offered "exclusively" by the Canadian carrier Telus, though documents on the FCC website reportedly indicate impending U.S. availability via Verizon. As offered by Telus, the S640 is a dual-band CDMA phone offering 1X-EVDO connectivity, said to be Revision A-capable with a future software update.

        The device has a 2.8-inch QVGA (320 x 240) touchscreen TFT display.

In the Telus version at least, the S640 does not incorporate GPS capabilities. However, it does include stereo Bluetooth, said by Telus to let the phone act as a wireless modem for a user's laptop.

According to Telus, the S640 also includes 802.11b/g wireless networking. However, this feature is not listed for the phone on HTC's own website, suggesting that WiFi is an optional feature that will be customized according to the particular wireless carrier.

The S640 is powered by a 400 MHz Qualcomm MSM7500 processor, which integrates an ARM11 applications processor and an ARM9 modem processor. The device also offers 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash, according to HTC.

Features and specifications listed by Telus and HTC for the S640 include:
        • Processor -- Qualcomm MSM7500, clocked at 400 MHz
        • Memory -- 128 MB of RAM; 256 MB of flash
        • Display -- 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen
        • Wireless interfaces:
          • WAN -- CDMA2000 dual-band, 1X EVDO
          • WLAN -- WiFi (cited for Telus version)
          • PAN -- stereo Bluetooth 2.0
        • Camera -- 2 megapixel camera with autofocus
        • I/O -- 11-pin mini-USB port
        • Expansion -- microSD slot
        • Battery -- rechargeable lithium-ion
        • Dimensions -- 4.0 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches (101 x 60 mm x 14 mm)
        • Weight -- 4 ounces (112 g)
Like other Windows Mobile 6 Professional devices, the S640 includes Direct Push email as well as HTML email capabilities. Other bundled software includes Internet Explorer, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile, Windows Live, and Windows Media Player 10. To this, Telus has added its "Pocket Express" application store, plus services said to include access to customized news, sports, weather, and more.

Available now, the S640 is priced at $450 (Canadian dollars) without a service contract, $350 with a two-year contract, or $150 with a three-year contract. More information is available from the Telus website, here.
