Software adds security to Windows Embedded POS edition

Sygate Technologies claims that it will be the first security vendor to deliver a product for the Windows Embedded for Point of Service (POS) platform. The new software package, based on an earlier offering for Windows XP Embedded, offers "continuous protection" to point-of-sale/service devices against misuse, malicious access, and misconfiguration, according to the company.

Windows Embedded for POS was first announced last October, and was demonstrated at the National Retail Federation conference in January. The platform touts plug-and-play perpheral functionality that, for the first time, enables retail-style peripherals to be easily installed and managed.

Sygate's security add-on for Windows Embedded for POS is an adaptation of its existing product, Security Agent for Windows XP Embedded, which the company says provides "compliance on contact -- a complete information protection process that automates the discovery, protection, enforcement, and remediation of all network-connected devices."

Point-of-sale devices such as scanners, receipt printers, cash drawers, and magnetic stripe readers "are endpoints that require a protection strategy just like any desktop or laptop," noted Rich Siegel, director of business development for Embedded Systems at Sygate.
