Windows Embedded for POS was first
announced last October, and was
demonstrated at the National Retail Federation conference in January. The platform touts plug-and-play perpheral functionality that, for the first time, enables retail-style peripherals to be easily installed and managed.
Sygate's security add-on for Windows Embedded for POS is an adaptation of its
existing product, Security Agent for Windows XP Embedded, which the company says provides "compliance on contact -- a complete information protection process that automates the discovery, protection, enforcement, and remediation of all network-connected devices."
Point-of-sale devices such as scanners, receipt printers, cash drawers, and magnetic stripe readers "are endpoints that require a protection strategy just like any desktop or laptop," noted Rich Siegel, director of business development for Embedded Systems at Sygate.
