Toshiba has introduced software that gives Windows Mobile device users remote access to enterprise telephone systems. SoftIPT version 2.1 works with the company's family of Strata communications systems, providing standard desktop telephone features on the mobile device, the company says.

SoftIPT, a "software telephone client," operates over a wide area network or via WiFi, according to Toshiba. Providing the user with full access to his or her enterprise phone extension, it supports all its features, including call parking, hold, transfer, redial, conferencing, caller ID, and call record.

Toshiba says the client delivers a friendly GUI interface that looks and feels just like the company's desktop telephones. Pull-down menus provide access to incoming and outgoing calls, plus hundreds of other call handling features, according to the company.

New features in version 2.1 include an IP user mobility feature, Toshiba says. This allows a user to log into a SoftIPT softphone even when the extension is being used by a desktop telephone or another mobile device.

According to the company, the new version also supports Toshiba's Video Communication Solution, which provides video conferencing and collaboration via camera-equipped devices. Additionally, it now provides tighter integration with Microsoft Outlook, including support for multiple Outlook profiles, enhanced contact search capabilities, and click-to-call features.

Toshiba says SoftIPT supports devices running Pocket PC 2003, and Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0. Specific devices cited as compatible include the Toshiba's e750, 755, e800, e805; and HP's iPAQ h5550, h5555, and hx4700.

SoftIPT is also targets notebook computers, tablet PCs, and desktop PCs running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, Toshiba said.

The software is available now, though pricing was not disclosed. More information is available from the company's website, here.
