Synchronica Plc has released an update to its open standards-based mobile device management software. Mobile Manager version 1.3 offers a richer set of management functions to support new device features such as the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU (adaptation kit update), with advanced security, device querying, and reporting capability, according to the company.

Synchronica says that Mobile manager is primarily aimed at small enterprises, enabling them to configure, manage, and secure employees' smartphones over-the-air (OTA). It can also be useful to mobile operators and application service providers (ASPs) to manage subscribers' phones. Administrators use a simple web-based graphical user interface and step-by-step wizard to manage a fleet of devices, without requiring intensive training.

Mobile Manager 1.3 allows administrators to query devices and display parameters in a web browser for remote diagnosis. Administrators can remotely set WiFi parameters, remove specified email accounts or web favorites from a device or group of devices, retrieve contact lists, and extend the list of emergency numbers that can be called if the device is locked. Additionally, devices can be checked remotely for the presence of software update files, and OTA software updates can be scheduled to minimize disruption, according to the company.

One interesting new security feature, Synchronica points out, is the ability to set policy for Mobile Manager's existing "Lock and Wipe" feature, which can be triggered from the device by SIM changes, to protect corporate data held on mobile devices if they are stolen.

        Availability

Mobile Manager currently supports Windows Mobile smartphones and Pocket PCs, as well as Symbian Series 60, 80, and 90 smartphones. Pricing was not disclosed.
