Access Co. Ltd. has developed client software that allows users of Windows Mobile Pocket PCs to remotely access live TV and multimedia over a wireless broadband connection. The NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC works in tandem with PCs and home media servers equipped with Sony's LocationFree multimedia transmission technology, according to the company.

LocationFree appears to be similar in concept to applications from Sling Media and Softel vdm that stream video from a set-top box or a PC, over a home network or the Internet, to mobile devices.

Sony sells a combination 1.2-inch SVGA monitor and networked base station that serves as a LocationFree multimedia transmitter. Sony also offers a version of the LocationFree Player client software that runs on PCs.

"As the communications infrastructure, the merger of communications and media, and the evolution of digital consumer electronics continue to advance, Access is focusing more and more on technologies that will seamlessly connect the services and devices that are beginning to debut now and into the future," said Access president Toru Arakawa. "By providing this image viewing software, Access, together with companies like Sony, will advance the LocationFree lifestyle globally through PDA's and other devices. In the future, we intend to develop all kinds of products that will allow users to enjoy a LocationFree lifestyle with all information-based home electronics, including mobile phones."

NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC is expected to ship sometime in the second half of 2006, according to Access.

Access is well known for its NetFront mobile web browser, which it supplies to numerous mobile phone makers.
