An educational program in Germany has the objective of improving the speaking capabilities of young children from 4 to 6 years old in day care facilities using tablet PCs, touch input, and text-to-speech software. The interactive program, called "Schlaumaeuse," is intended to help children understand the connection between written and spoken language, as well as improve their intonation and pronunciation.

Two hundred day care centers, scheduled to take part in the program, will receive tablet PCs with specially developed language-learning software based on Cornelsen's educational software and ScanSoft's RealSpeak. Words written on the tablet PC are "heard" via text-to-speech software functions.

The Microsoft-sponsored project is supported by UNICEF, German politicians, the Cornelesen Publishing House, HP, ScanSoft, and other hardware and software vendors.
