Windows navigator provides heads up display

Springteq announced a pair of Windows CE-based PNDs (portable navigation devices) that project heads up displays onto a car's windshield. The WeGo produces a 4.5-inch virtual image, while the WeGo Mini offers a 3.5-inch image, and both include RF-based wireless remote control, the company says.

Springteq claims that the WeGo and WeGo Mini are the first all-in-one PNDs to feature heads up displays (HUDs). We can't vouch for that claim, but note that the only similar product we've encountered -- the Asus R710 from 2008 -- came with dual displays, one designed to show maps to a driver and the other designed to reflect information from a vehicle's windshield.

The Springteq devices include only projected displays which, the company claims, create an image that is reflected off the windshield and appears to float about one meter (3.3 feet in front of the driver). They'll operate even in sunlight because of their extreme brightness -- 10,000-nit in the case of the WeGo Mini and 13,000-nit in the case of the WeGo, according to the company.

Springteq says the WeGo produces a 4.5-inch virtual image with a 5:3 aspect ratio, a resolution of 400 x 240 pixels, and a 500:1 contrast ratio. The WeGo Mini, on the other hand, is said to produce a 3.5-inch virtual image with a 4:3-inch aspect ratio, 320 x 240 pixel resolution, and a 500:1 contrast ratio.

It appears that, as on the Asus R710, the WeGo's HUD defaults to showing relatively simple information, such as a readout showing the distance to the next turn and an arrow illustrating which direction to go. However, maps may also be displayed, according to Springtec, which adds that an included, RF-based remote control (right) can be used to switch modes. (The company provided no information on how destination addresses are entered, however.)

Both the WeGo and WeGo Mini are said to run Windows CE on a 400MHz Samsung S3C2416XL-40 processor (not a model number we've encountered on other than Shenzhen products, but certainly denoting an ARM-based SoC). They include 64MB of RAM, 2GB of flash storage, and a SD slot, the company adds.

Features and specifications listed by Springteq for the WeGo and WeGo Mini include:
