        TI subsidiary spins rugged Windows CE handheld

        Intelligent Instrumentation (a subsidiary of Texas Instruments) has added a new device to its line of rugged terminals running on Windows CE. The handheld LANpoint Mobile complements the previously introduced LANpoint and


        href="http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS4173001168.html" target=new>LANpoint PLUS terminals, to cover a broad range of applications, according to the company.

        LANpoint Mobile runs Windows CE 4.1 on a 400 MHz Intel PXA255 processor, equipped with 64 MB of RAM and 48 MB of Flash memory. The company characterizes the device as an "open architecture" handheld that takes advantage of "current and future technology" and offers a range of options.

        Intelligent Instrumentation lists the following key features and specifications for the LANpoint Mobile:
        • Processor -- 400 MHz Intel PXA255
        • Memory:
          • RAM -- 64 MB standard; 128 MB optional
          • Flash -- 48 MB standard; 96 MB optional
          • Persistent storage -- size not specified
        • Display:
          • 3.5-inch QVGA, 64K color
          • Transflective, sunlight readable
          • Software-controlled backlight
          • Touchscreen
        • Expansion:
          • CompactFlash slot -- integrated; or optionally, user accessible
          • SD/MMC slot -- user accessible
        • Wireless options
          • Cisco IEEE802.11b
          • Bluetooth via Compact Flash
        • Other optional I/O ports:
          • RS-232
          • USB 1.1 host for barcode scanners, keyboard, etc.
          • USB 1.1 client for syncing with a host
        • Keypad:
          • 49-key, full alphanumeric, plus 2 side Scan keys
          • 12 Function keys, (4 dedicated, 8 shifted)
          • One centrally located Scan key, two side Scan keys
          • 2 "Enter" keys (right/left-hand accessible)
          • One-hand "sticky key" operation
          • Programmable audible "key click"
        • Scanner options:
          • Integrated 1D laser (SE923)
          • Other scanners accomodated through RS-232 or USB
        • Software:
          • Operating system -- Windows CE 4.1
          • Software Developer's Kit (SDK) with support for:
            • eVC++
            • Visual Basic.NET
            • Visual C#
          • .NET Compact Framework 1.0 with SQL server
          • XML, Jscript, VBScript
          • NDIS 5.1
          • TCP/IP and network utilities
        The LANpoint Mobile is expected to be avaiable this month, according to the company. Pricing was not disclosed.
