T-Mobile claims it is about to become the first U.S. wireless carrier to provide a downloadable upgrade from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6.0. Users of the company's Dash mobile phone will be able to upgrade their devices starting May 4.

The Dash, introduced in the US last fall, features a full QWERTY keyboard and both Bluetooth and WiFi wireless connectivity. It's made by Taiwanese ODM (original design manufacturer) HTC and is based on the same platform as HTC's own S620.

The Windows Mobile 6 upgrade enables users to view and edit Microsoft Office documents, and also will allow them to view email messages in their original rich HTML format, including live links to Web sites, T-Mobile said. It also provides access to the entire suite of Microsoft's Windows Live services for Windows Mobile devices.

Leslie Grandy, VP of product development for T-Mobile USA, stated that T-Moble is "the first company in the U.S. to offer the increased functionality of Microsoft Windows Mobile 6."

The Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade for the Dash can be downloaded here starting May 4. The Dash with Windows Mobile 6 will also be available from T-Mobile retail stores and online beginning in June, the company said.
