Technical article explores Windows XPe SP2 HORM

An article published on Microsoft's MSDN developer website takes an in-depth look at hibernate once, resume many (HORM), one of the new features of Windows XP Embedded SP2. HORM offers the ability to more rapidly boot an embedded system provided the system is protected by the enhanced write filter (EWF), according to Aaron Stebner, of Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded team.

Stebner says that the team has gotten a lot of questions from customers about HORM and EWF since the release of XPe SP2. In particular, many people want to know if it is possible to use HORM without having EWF enabled for all partitions on a system. In a jukebox device, for example, it would be useful to store music and playlists on a separate data volume and not necessarily protect that volume with EWF, according to Stebner.

To answer these questions, the Windows XP Embedded team has written an in-depth document about how to programatically dismount volumes in EWF and HORM scenarios so that not all volumes must be protected with EWF. The paper includes sample code showing how to dismount volumes in C.
