Telmap has introduced mobile navigation technology said to overcome the limitations of small screens and constrained resources in handheld devices. The company says its Mobile Optimized Navigation Data (MOND) technology delivers more useful, timely, and reliable navigation data, including sliding and rotating maps that move...

According to Telmap, patented MOND technology optimizes the transfer of navigation and map data to a wireless device for maximum usability and efficient network performance. When a route is calculated, the response dataset includes not only the requested route, but also all relevant roads in the surrounding area. This large dataset is then re-formatted, heavily compressed on the server side using MOND, and made available to the user's device without the need to return to the server for additional information.

Telmap says that its approach offers faster route adjustment in the event of a wrong turn or other deviation from the original route, because no additional data download is required. The system automatically presents the adjusted route based on information already available within the device.

The moving map feature automatically transitions to each new map area as the vehicle proceeds along the route without the need to download additional information, according to Telmap. A "sliding map" zooms in to show the details of each turn.

Telmap CEO Oren Nissim stated, "Our MOND technology enables on-the-fly, cost-efficient delivery and utilization of navigation map data even with the limited resources available on a mass-market mobile handset. For the first time, mid-range cellphones, smartphones, and BlackBerrys can have GPS navigation with truly high-quality rendering, map matching and natural movement from map area to map area."

MOND is supported on the Windows Mobile, BREW, Java, BlackBerry, and Symbian platforms, according to Telmap. The company will demonstrate MOND at the CTIA Wireless 2006 show next week in Las Vegas.
