The SpeechWorks Division of ScanSoft Inc. has announced its latest text-to-speech (TTS) product, which supports embedded systems and devices running Windows CE. RealSpeak Solo 4.0 provides a "highly scalable, complete" embedded TTS solution that targets handheld and automotive navigation applications, SpeechWorks says.

SpeechWorks claims that RealSpeak Solo is the "most global and pervasive" embedded TTS solution available, having a portfolio of more than 20 languages scheduled for world-wide release in a variety of female and male voices. Other features contributing to its application and geographic flexibility include unlimited vocabularies and customized dictionaries.

According to SpeechWorks, RealSpeak Solo 4.0 is optimized for embedded navigation applications, providing accurate pronunciation of navigation-related text commonly used in automotive solutions and navigation devices. Other automotive applications include hands-free dialing, and command and control.

The RealSpeak Solo SDK is available for the full range of Microsoft Windows operating systems, including Windows CE Version 3.0 and higher and Windows XP (presumably including Windows XP Embedded, the componentized version of Windows XP). The package supports 11, 16, and 22KHz operation, enabling developers to choose a maximum quality for their hardware configuration, according to SpeechWorks. It is SAPI 5.0 compliant, and comes with a proprietary ScanSoft API with support for the Speechify Solo API enabling an easy transition for existing Speechify customers.
