Igel has updated its "Smart" and "Compact" thin clients with new and enhanced models running Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded. In addition to faster processors and more memory, the Compact series adds Windows XP Embedded support while the Smart series gains a low-end terminal-emulation-only model.

The Compact thin client series moves up to a 533 MHz Via Eden processor. The Windows CE version comes with 128 MB of RAM; the Windows XP Embedded version has 256 MB, expandable to 1 GB. The Compact series includes an integrated Smartcard reader for convenient secure authentication.

The Smart, positioned as Igel's entry-level thin client series, now runs a 400 MHz Via Eden CPU with 128 MB of RAM standard, expandable to 1 GB. The unit features a maximum power dissipation of 20 watts. The model 1100 terminal emulator represents an inexpensive alternative to ASCII terminals in legacy environments, Igel says.
