AMD is now shipping a reference design kit (RDK) for development of thin clients based on its low power, x86-compatible Geode GX processors. Targeted markets for the RDK, which comes with support for Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded, include enterprise, blade PCs, point-of-sale, and education.

AMD describes its new GX thin client RDK as a flexible, complete package that includes both hardware and software solutions and information. The RDK is based on the recently introduced Geode GX 533@1.1W processor, running at 400 MHz.

The 4.7 x 5.3 inch PC board, packaged in a 5 x 5.5 x 1 inch housing, has a typical power consumption of 6W active, 1W standby, AMD says. The board includes features such as:
        • Display resolution to 1600x1200
        • 4 USB 1.1 ports
        • 10/100 Mb Ethernet
        • Legacy I/O expansion via a daughter card
        • DiskOnChip Flash memory storage
        • Audio expansion for VoIP
The GX thin client RDK comes with documentation, full schematics, layout files, and driver packages for supported operating systems, according to AMD, and is currently sampling. The first public demonstration of the RDK takes place this week at Computex in Taipei.
