Igel Technology has added a new, Windows XP Embedded-based model to its entry-level "Smart" thin client family. The IGEL-2510 XP Smart is based on a 400MHz Via Eden processor, supports dual monitors, and is compatible with a wide range of networking and communications protocols, according to the company.

The design of the IGEL-2510 XP pairs Via's Eden processor with the companion CN700 chipset, and complements those core components with up to a gigabyte each of DRAM and CompactFlash. The device's display controller supports up to 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution 24-bit color graphics, and a smart card reader option allows for enhanced system security, the company says.

        Other claimed hardware features include:
        • Audio:
          • AC97 comp. audio chipset
          • 16-bit stereo FM synthesizer
          • Built-in loudspeaker
          • Stereo output jack
        • 10/100Base-T Fast Ethernet LAN port
        • RS-232C port; up to 115.2 Kbps
        • Four USB 2.0 ports (2 front, 2 back)
        • Two PS/2 keyboard/mouse ports
        • Dimensions -- 8.5 x 1.4 x 8.5 inches
        • Weight -- 4 pounds
From the software perspective, the company lists the following features and specs:
        • Management:
          • "Complete" control via IGEL's Remote Management Suite
          • Local set-up configuration
          • ThinPrint Client

          • Shockwave
          • Microsoft Internet Explorer
          • Media Player

Igel claims the 2510 to be "the most price competitive Windows XPe thin client," as well as "the only thin client available at this price to offer dual screen capability."

The IGEL-2510 XP Smart appears to be available immediately, with a list price of $429, which presumably includes the "standard" memory amounts for the Windows XP Embedded Smart model: 256MB of DRAM and 512MB of CompactFlash storage.

The company also offers a Windows CE version and a Linux version of the "Smart" thin client.
