UK-based Xeratus claims to be the first thin client vendor to ship products based on Windows XP Embedded Feature Pack 2007 (FP2007). The company says it is now installing FP2007 on all of its Xpect desktop and Xpect laptop series of products.

The Xpect series products are small adapters that can convert desktop and laptop PCs into solid-state thin clients running Windows XP Embedded, based on a simple, five-minute installation process, according Xeratus. Xpect for desktops (shown above) packages 512 MB to 32 GB of flash storage in a compact unit that plugs directly into the IDE connector on a PC motherboard. The laptop version (shown at right) substitutes for a 2.5- or 1.8-inch IDE hard drive.

Specific enhancements to thin client functionality that result from the upgrade of Xpect to Feature Pack 2007, according to the company, include:
        • Improved Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) for better filesystem protection
        • Better support for .NET Framework 2.0 applications
        • Support for SQL Server Express SMS 2003 and Operations Manager 2003 agent
In addition, Xeratus says it has enhanced its XPe build by offering multiple language interfaces so that users can easily change the system language.

Xeratus CEO Jay Savoor adds, "We see the new builds and devices equipped with Feature Pack 2007 to be faster, more compact in terms of build size, and also allow us to achieve even faster build times for our customers that require customization."
