Thin clients switch to Windows Embedded Standard

Wyse has announced two top-of-the-line "R Class" thin clients running Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 2009. The R90LW and R90LEW include AMD Sempron processors, up to 2GB of RAM and 4GB of flash, dual-monitor support, as many as 10 USB ports, and optional wireless networking, Wyse says.

Wyse's new R90LW and R90LEW are similar to the R90L and R90LE announced last November, but the "W" suffix on their names indicates that the devices now run Microsoft's WES operating system. While still employing the Windows XP codebase, WES improves on the Windows XP Embedded (XPe) OS used in previous thin clients by offering more drivers, tabbed web browsing, the Silverlight multimedia plug-in, .NET Framework 3.5, and the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) version 6.1, according to Microsoft.

The R90LW and R90LEW feature AMD Sempron CPUs -- 1.0GHz for the former, and 1.5GHz for the latter -- plus discrete graphics courtesy of the ATI 690E chipset. According to Wyse, the devices support DirectX 9, and each also includes dual DVI ports (one DVI-I, one DVI-D). The R90LEW supports dual, 2500 x 1600 displays with 32-bit color, while the R90LW does the same while offering 24-bit depth.

According to Wyse, both thin clients come with 1GB of standard RAM, expandable to 2GB, and 2GB of flash storage, expandable to 4GB. Both also include dual PS/2 ports, dual serial ports, and audio I/O, while the R90LEW adds a parallel printer port. As for USB, the R90LW is said to include two USB 2.0 ports in front, and four on the back, while the R90LEW adds four USB ports internally.

Finally, the R90LEW's wider case (above) provides room for a PCI Express x4 expansion slot, with an x16-style slot that supports half-length, full-height cards. Alternatively, the space may be employed for an optional 2.5-inch hard disk drive, Wyse says.

Ricardo Antuna, a senior vice president in charge of product management for Wyse, said, "Our support of WES ... demonstrates our continuing innovation in addressing the embedded market. We have taken the key benefits of our existing devices, and added new performance features and a seamless transition path to quickly meet market demand."

Wyse lists specs as follows for the R90LW and R90LEW:
