TiVo has unveiled a new feature that enables subscribers to transfer content from their TiVo to a Windows XP based PC, and from there, to a Windows Mobile device such as a Smartphone,

At the TiVo end, the TiVo Series2 DVR must be outfitted with a wired or wireless USB network adapter, such as the Linksys USB200M (Ethernet) or Linksys WUSB12 (Wi-Fi 802.11b). At the desktop-PC end, Windows XP or XP Media Center Edition is required, and the user must install the TiVo Desktop version 2.0 software application, which is available for free download from TiVo's website. With that setup in place, files can be transferred from the TiVo to the PC. Once the files are on the PC, Windows Media Player 10 is used to transfer the desired files to a Windows Mobile device (Pocket PC, Smartphone, or PMC).

What if users wish to transfer content directly from their TiVo to their Windows Mobile gadget? No problem! Within 60 days, TiVo says, an update to TiVoToGo will allow subscribers to transfer files directly from a TiVo to a Windows Mobile device, although the company hasn't specified what interfaces will be supported for handling the transfer. Certainly, the ability to transfer content via Bluetooth to a Bluetooth-enabled Smartphone would be popular; that would require a USB-to-Bluetooth adapter on the TiVo side, and possibly some tweaks to the TiVoToGo software running in the TiVo.

TiVoToGo is incorporated in the latest TiVo service update, version 7.1-X, that will be automatically downloaded to subscribers' TiVOs through a scheduled rollout process.
