Tiny, IXP465-based processor module runs Windows CE

Applied Data Systems (ADS) has introduced a processor module based on Intel's XScale IXP465 processor and supported under Windows CE. The ADS TurboIXP module is designed to piggyback on an application-specific baseboard that's tuned an individual end product's requirements, according to the...

        company.

The TurboIXP module measures 4 x 2.7 inches, and houses the IXP465 processor, clocked at 200MHz, 400MHz, 533MHz, or 667MHz. Not commonly seen in general-purpose devices, the IXP465 is positioned as a "network processor" by Intel; it provides built-in LAN, WAN, I2C, and synchronous serial port (SSP) interfaces.

According to Intel, the IXP465 also includes support for the IEEE 1588 standard for synchronizing clocks on measurement and control systems. This functionality is supported by ADS, though the processor's UTOPIA-2 DSL interface may not be.

As implemented by ADS, the processor module includes 128 MB of DDR1-266 SDRAM, and up to 64 MB of flash memory. Other core TurboIXP Module functionalities are said to include USB 2.0 host and 1.1 function ports, IEEE 1588 precision clock synchronization, two 10/100 Ethernet interfaces, and a 32-bit PCI 2.2 interface. Serial interfaces on the module include one UART that supports RS-232 and one that supports RS-232/RS-485.

ADS says it offers an optional TurboIXP baseboard for evaluation purposes (not pictured). The 9.5 x 7.3-inch baseboard most notably adds a Silicon Motion SM502 graphics controller, with support for analog RGB, 24-bit LVDS, and RGB565. The controller also features a backlight connector and a 4- or 5-wire resistive touchscreen interface.

Also added by the baseboard are a single interface for mini PCI, dual interfaces for PCMCIA, and connectors for the TurboIXP Module's USB and Ethernet interfaces. The board also includes two CAN interfaces and five additional USB 2.0 ports.

Features and specifications listed by ADS for the Turbo IXP Module include:
        • Processor -- IXP465, clocked at 200MHz, 400MHz, 533MHz, or 667MHz
