The ConnectCore Wi-9C features Digi's own radio technology and comes precertified, thus eliminating "costly and time-consuming certification processes for the device manufacturer," according to vice president of engineering Joel Young.

In addition to its wired and wireless networking functions, the ARM9-based module provides up to 256 MB of SDRAM and 256 MB of flash memory, plus up to four serial ports, up to four SPI ports, an I2C bus interface, a USB 2.0 port, and an LCD controller that supports resolutions up to 800 x 600 pixels (SVGA). Other onboard functions include up to 55 general-purpose I/O lines, up to eight 16/32-bit timer/counters, and a real-time clock.

The module measures 3.1 by 3.6 inches (not including the antenna), and supports an extended operating temperature range of 40 to +85 degrees C. It complies with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive, according to Digi.

The Wi-9C will be available in Q3 of 2006, with pricing starting at $149 each in 1,000 quantities. Development kits will also be available at that time for Windows CE 5.0 and Linux, according to the company.
