Tool eases upgrade from Windows XPe SP1 to SP2

[Updated Oct. 10] -- As part of the Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 Community Technology Preview, an evaluation version of a toolset that eases the upgrading of Windows XP Embedded devices from SP1 to SP2 has been released. Additionally, a second CTP build is now available.

The Image Difference Engine and Image Difference Applier tools -- collectively known as "ImageDiff" -- identify and package only the changed or added files and registry keys, according to a post on Mike Hall's blog. This allows for a field upgrade without having to redeploy a complete Windows XP Embedded with SP2 image.

The ImageDiff tools can also help determine and package smaller upgrades, including operating system security updates and hotfixes, configuration changes, third-party application updates, and line-of-business data, Hall says.

Registered participants in the Feature Pack 2007 CTP program can download the ImageDiff tools here. Refer to our earlier coverage for instructions on registering for the Feature Pack 2007 CTP.

This capability is "Super cool!," writes Hall. "If you are not already signed up for the Windows XP Embedded Feature Pack 2007 Community Tech Preview then here's your reason to sign up and download."

        Second CTP build posted

The Embedded Team has released a second build of the Community Technology Preview of Feature Pack 2007. The new build includes updates to USB boot, FBWF, and several component enhancements. The team has encouraged all CTP participants to download the new build and continue providing feedback.
