        Toshiba selects CE .NET for retail POS software platform

        Toshiba TEC Corp., the largest supplier of point-of-sale (POS) systems in Japan, is basing its next generation of retail POS terminals on Windows CE .NET 4.2, according to a statement issued today by Microsoft.         capabilities in Windows CE .NET 4.2, Microsoft said. The new POS terminals will be used in retail environments such as hotels, convenience stores, and shopping centers.

        Toshiba TEC vice president Hiroshi Wada said his group carefully evaluated "a range of embedded operating systems" before choosing Windows CE. "By standardizing our platform on CrossMission, our business application framework built with Visual Studio .NET 2003, the .NET Framework and Windows CE .NET 4.2, we will be able to provide the distribution service industry with the latest POS systems and distribution solutions utilizing Internet technology," noted Wada. "Further, with access to the operating system source code, Toshiba TEC can customize the POS terminal operating system according to customer specifications," he added.
