A wireless softphone product from Toshiba has received a Product of the Year Award from Planet PDA magazine. Toshiba's SoftIPT SoftPhone wirelessly extends the features and functionality of Toshiba desktop telephones to "suitably equipped" PDAs running Pocket PC 2003, as well as fixed and mobile PCs running Windows XP, according to Toshiba.

According to Toshiba, SoftIPT SoftPhone allows users to access business telephone features from virtually any location by connecting to an enterprise's Toshiba Strata CIX native IP business communication systems or Strata CTX digital business communication systems through 802.11 wireless networks.

In selecting SoftIPT SoftPhone for the award, the judges praised Toshiba for "going the extra mile in creating the SoftIPT SoftPhone, a truly innovative handheld computing product."

"The SoftIPT can be used anywhere users have access to wired or wireless connectivity, empowering them to extend their desktop telephones to their PDAs, laptops, and/or PCs, increasing productivity and mobility as well as reducing overall communication costs," said Larry Meyer, sales and marketing vice president of Toshiba's Digital Products Division.
