Palm has released a downloadable update that migrates its Treo 750 smartphone to Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Among other enhancements, the free update enables the phone's HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) capability, the company says.

Within a few months after the Treo 750 first launched, Palm claimed that a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade would be available. Now, the update has finally appeared, at least for users who are customers of Vodafone in the Netherlands, U.K., or Ireland.

Palm also lists the Windows Mobile 6 / HSDPA upgrade as "coming soon" for "generic, non-branded" Treo 750s. AT&T/Cingular customers are still in a watch-this-space situation, though; an upgrade tailored for their Treos was reportedly leaked onto the Internet last month, but apparently is still being tested.

Palm says its update provides software and hardware features such as:
        • Improved calendar management
        • HTML-formatted email messages
        • The ability to set an out-of-office message remotely
        • Live links to Microsoft SharePoint documents
        • Voice commands via Bluetooth
        • USB cable charging
The company has previously touted the Treo's "unique suite of software enhancements on top of Windows Mobile," said to include:
        • Today Screen enhancements, which feature the ability to "dial by name" with a few keystrokes on the keyboard, perform a web search directly from the Today Screen and perform one-touch dialing with personalized photo speed dials

        • Ability to manage a call directly from the Today Screen and stay on top of voicemail with on-screen, VCR-like icons, such as rewind, delete and fast-forward controls for easy navigation

        • Ability to ignore a call and quickly compose a text message such as "In a meeting" or "Can't talk right now" by selecting the "Ignore with text" option from the incoming-call screen.
Vodafone customers can download the update here.
