Trimble says its new GeoExplorer 6000 handhelds (right) are designed to work with mapping and GIS (geographic information system) software, and are designed to provide very high accuracy. Offered in a GeoXT model and a GeoXH model, the devices employ TI's OMAP3503 processor, have 256MB of RAM, and include 2GB of flash storage, according to the company. The GeoXT model has a single-frequency GPS receiver using Trimble's own Maxwell 6 chipset, which provides it with a 45-second time to first fix, the ability to use 220 channels, and operation with SBAS (satellite based augmentation systems). This device provides 30-inch accuracy in real time and 20-inch accuracy after software postprocessing, according to Trimble.
The similar GeoXH model uses the same chipset but gains the ability to work with both GPS (U.S.) and GLONASS (Russian) satellite networks. According to Trimble, this version also offers "Floodlight" technology that can boost accuracy in areas where satellite signals are obscured by buildings or trees.
Trimble says the GeoXH provides real-time accuracy down to four inches. Meanwhile, the company adds, the GeoXT may be upgraded to include Floodlight, in which case it also becomes capable of working with GLONASS satellites.
Both GeoXH and GeoXT have 4.2-inch, sunlight-readable touchscreens with VGA resolution, according to Trimble. The devices survive four-foot drops, meet the IP65 standard for sealing against liquids or dust, and have a field-swappable battery providing from five to 11.5 hours of operation, the company adds.
The GeoXH and GeoXT also include a five megapixel autofocus camera that can take VGA-resolution video, says Trimble. Both feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and an optional 3.5G cellular modem that apparently provides voice communications as well as data.
As well as offering an internal microphone and speaker, the handhelds also include mini-USB ports, SIM sockets, and SDHC slots. A DB9 serial port can be provided via an optional USB-to-serial converter, adds Trimble.
