IP telephony specialist Avaya Inc. has added Windows Mobile device support to its "Unified Communications" portfolio for Windows-oriented enterprises. One-X Mobile and IP Softphone for Windows Mobile 5.0 makes it easier for workers to "communicate and collaborate" from a broader range of applications, locations, and devices, according to the company.

Avaya's Unified Communications Solutions for Microsoft suite comprises various telephony, conferencing, and messaging applications that integrate with Microsoft Office Communicator, Exchange, Office Outlook, Office Sharepoint, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Live Meeting, the company says. The latest release adds Windows Mobile 5.0 devices to the mix.

According to Avaya, the IP Softphone for Windows Mobile 5.0 adds IP telephony functionality to specialized WiFi-enabled handhelds, such as the Symbol MC50 or MC70 devices, and extends enterprise control features to them. Incoming calls can be set to simultaneously ring at both a desk phone and a mobile device. Calls initiated on the mobile device can be routed through Avaya servers for significant cost savings, especially on international calls.

IP Softphone provides access to such Avaya Communication Manager features as "click-to-call" and "integrated telephony presence." Users can click-to-call any phone number highlighted in Internet Explorer, from inside Microsoft Office Communicator, or from applications with "Smart Tags," such as Office Outlook and Sharepoint. Additionally, real-time telephony presence provides status information of colleagues on each user's "buddy list," according to the company.

Avaya's VP of Unified Communications, Eileen Rudden, stated, "Avaya Unified Communications Solutions for Microsoft provide users with a flexible, seamless interface to powerful telephony, messaging, or conferencing capabilities from desktop applications. These solutions are geared to fit user needs and preferences while enabling IT to securely and sensibly support the diversity of communications requirements that can maximize productivity across the entire organization."

One-X Mobile and IP Softphone for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices is available now, according to Avaya. Pricing was not disclosed.
