Kineto Wireless is making its UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) client software available for mobile phones based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile Pocket PC platform. Kineto's UMA Client Software enables dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets to access voice, data, and IMS services over IP broadband access and unlicensed spectrum technologies, the company says.

Kineto offers a suite of UMA-oriented products and services aimed at silicon platform suppliers, mobile handset developers, and phone-adaptor vendors integrating UMA technology into their mobile devices, including Platform Developer Kits (PDKs), UMA Client Software, and integration services.

The company also announced that the BenQ model P50 quad-band Pocket PC phone is the first device to incorporate its UMA Client Software for the Windows Mobile Pocket PC platform. The P50 will be demonstrated at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France next week.

        About UMA Technology

The UMA Technology website describes UMA as follows:

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology provides access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks.

The specifications defining UMA were developed by a consortium of fixed-line and mobile operators, device manufacturers, and third party software vendors, and are available for free download. The participating companies say they are actively working with the 3GPP standards organization to use the UMA specifications as the basis for the development of a formal standard.
