Verizon Wireless has added three new Windows Mobile-based handsets to its burgeoning line of smartphones. The trio consists of the SMT5800 and SCH-i760, running Windows Mobile 6, and the Windows Mobile 5-based XV6800.

Like most carriers, Verizon has turned to a variety of vendors for its phones: HTC, for example, is the supplier of the SMT5800, previously code-named "Libra." Samsung, meanwhile, is the source for the Windows Mobile 6 Professional-based SCH-i760 (pictured at right), which was additionally announced today by Verizon. Finally, Verizon also announced -- but provided few details of -- the XV6800, "dressed in blue and designed for sophistication."

        SMT5800

Described as a "chic, slim package that fits pocket or purse with equal discretion," the SMT5800 is a dual-band CDMA phone (1900 MHz and 800 MHz) with 3G support via Verizon's EV-DO network. Apart from the different cellular capabilities, it reportedly is identical to HTC's S710 (aka "Vox"), which offers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE telephony and is claimed to have been the world's first to offer Windows Mobile 6.0 (the device runs the "Standard Edition").

        The SMT5800 measures 4 x 2.0 x 0.7 inches (103 x 51 x 19 mm), and comes with a 2.4-inch display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It also features a 2 megapixel camera that captures video and still images.

Because Verizon has released no other specifications for the device, we have adapted those previously listed by HTC for the S710 (pictured at right). They include:
        • Processor -- TI OMAP 850, clocked at 201 MHz
        • Keyboard -- 5-way navigation controller and slide-out QWERTY keyboard
        • Display -- 2.4-inch display with LED backlighting
        • Camera -- 2 megapixel
        • Wireless interfaces:
          • WAN -- CDMA dual-band (1900 MHz and 800 MHz), EV-DO compatible
          • WLAN -- WiFi 802.11b/g
          • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.0
        • Other I/O ports -- HTC ExtUSB (11-pin mini-USB and audio jack in one)
        • Expansion -- microSD slot
        • Battery type/life:
          • Lithium-ion polymer 1050 mAh
          • Standby -- up to 175 hours (GSM version; CDMA may differ)
          • Talk time -- 7 hours (GSM)
        • Dimensions -- 4 x 2.0 x 0.7 inches (103 x 51 x 19 mm)
        • Weight -- 4.9 ounces (140 grams)
        XV6800

Simultaneously announced by Verizon, but with few details, was the XV6800, "dressed in blue and designed for sophistication." This device features Windows Mobile 6 Professional and once again offers a slide-out keyboard and 2 megapixel camera.

According to several cell-phone rumor Web sites, the XV6800 is a CDMA-equipped version of HTC's TyTn (seen at right), originally announced with Windows Mobile 5 last year.

        Availability

In its announcement, Verizon said pricing and further information on the SMT5800 and XV6800 would be released "as the devices become available," without citing a schedule.
