        Verizon to offer Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC phone

        Verizon has begun offering a branded version of HTC's Apache platform in the US, marketed by UTStarcom Personal Communications. The XV6700 runs Windows Mobile 5.0 and features a QWERTY keyboard that slides out from the side, as well as built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

        Sprint began offering its version of the XV6700 in the US, the PPC-6700, last fall.

        With the XV6700, customers will "find the same Windows-based PC experience they are accustomed to with their desktop PC or laptop," according to Verizon. The device includes updated versions of Office Mobile programs for Windows Mobile 5.0, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office Word. It also supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync(R) for over-the-air synchronization of email and calendar information with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

        Verizon offered the following technical details on the XV6700:

        • Memory -- 64 MB RAM, 128 MB Flash

          • 2.8-inch TFT, 65K color, QVGA (240 x 320) resolution
          • automatically switches from portrait to landscape when keyboard slides out

        • Wireless:
          • dual band cellular (800MHz CDMA/1900MHz PCS) with support for 1xEV-DO/1xRTT
          • WiFi
          • Bluetooth, supporting protocols:
            • wireless headset
            • hands-free accessories
            • file transfer
            • synchronization with compatible PCs
        • Camera:
          • 1.3 megapixel
          • camcorder capable
          • built-in flash and macro functions
          • 8X digital zoom
          • resolutions from 180 x 160 to 1600 x 1280
        • Mobile Web 2.0-capable
        • Dimensions -- 5.2 x 2.32 x 0.93 inches (132 x 59 x 24 mm)
        • Weight -- 6.5 ounces
        Verizon says the XV6700 is immediatly available to enterprise customers through its business sales channels. After January 19, it will be available to consumers for around $300 with a 2-year contract and a "qualifying data plan."
