Microsoft has published a video that illustrates how to use Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS) to integrate peripherals into a POS system. In the 40-minute video, Windows Embedded product manager Mike Hall interviews Craig Jensen, a member of Microsoft's WEPOS development team.

During the interview, Jensen demonstrates how to integrate a two-line display into a WEPOS-based system, using about ten lines of code. He then goes on to demonstrate the Plug-and-Play capabilities of WEPOS using two examples -- a barcode scanner and a change dispenser.

WEPOS (Windows Embedded for Point of Service) is a retail-optimized version of Windows XP Embedded SP2 that supports both legacy and "cutting edge" retail peripherals, including the latest RFID and biometrics, according to Microsoft. It is the first POS (point-of-sales/service) software platform to support plug-and-play peripheral functionality, "the feature most requested by retailers," Microsoft has said.
