[Updated July 2] -- SoliCall is readying a noise-canceling add-on for VoIP networks that support SIP (session initiation protocol). SoftPhone Add-on, which recognizes human voices and automatically filters out background noise, can improve the performance of most VoIP clients by enhancing the system's normal sound...

Solicall claims that the current release of SoftPhone Add-on, still in beta, works with popular VoIP such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger. Users simply change system settings so that the Solicall sound driver is used instead of the previous default, the company says.

According to Solicall, SoftPhone Add-on transmits all human sounds and reduces other background noise, such as keyboard sounds or traffic. Its performance can be improved by recording a sample of each speaker's voice for analysis in advance.

SoftPhone Add-on can also record conversations, even if a VoIP program does not itself have that feature, according the company. Conversations are saved to disk in either .WAV or .MP3 format.

Shlomi Simhi, SoliCall's director of marketing, stated, "This will mark the end of noisy business calls, and especially conference calls. Our customers report on a dramatic improvement in voice quality and on a whole new conversation experience."

Targeted at the desktop, SoftPhone Add-on joins existing products from Solicall that use the same core technology. For example, Solicall's PBXMate runs on Windows and Linux servers (versions not specified), operating with any VoIP network that supports SIP.

Additionally, the company offers a software development kit (SDK), written in standard C++, that enables developers to add its noise reduction technology to SIP-based VoIP clients on Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE, and Windows Mobile.

The current beta version of SoftPhone Add-on runs on Windows XP and Windows 2000. Free for personal use, it can be downloaded here.
