VoWiFi/cellular softphone supports Windows Mobile 5.0

Cicero Networks has released Windows Mobile 5.0 support for CiceroPhone, its converged VoIP/cellular softphone client. Additionally, the company says it has enhanced Cicero Controller, the central server that manages and routes softphone connections and enables seamless roaming between both WiFi/GSM and WiFi/CDMA networks.

CiceroPhone merges VoIP, fixed, and cellular voice calling into a single user interface on a mobile device. It integrates directly with the client platform's phonebook, so that calls can be dialed by number or by selection from the device's contact list, according to the company.

The client/server software combination (CiceroPhone plus Cicero Controller) targets carriers, alternative service providers, and cable operators who wish to offer wireless VoIP services to enterprise and corporate customers, the company says.

When the user connects to a wireless access point, CiceroPhone automatically registers with the Cicero Controller service provided by the user's mobile carrier, which authenticates and authorizes the user for a range of services, according to the company. When a call is placed, Cicero Controller uses details about both the caller and callee to select an appropriate gateway for call completion. Cicero Controller maintains a complete record of all call activity, including time and duration, for the operator's call accounting and billing systems.

Cicero says the new Call Continuity server module for Cicero Controller enables seamless roaming between both Wi-Fi/GSM and Wi-Fi/CDMA networks.

The company lists the following features and specifications for Cicero Controller, the client-side software:
        • Codecs -- G.711a-law; G.711 u-law; G.726-32kbs; G.726-16kbs; iLBC; GSM; G.729
        • Footprint -- less than 1.0 MB
        • Communication protocols supported -- SIP (RFC 3261); RTP/RTCP (RFC 1889); STUN (RFC 3489); SDP (RFC 2327)
        • Supported hardware -- dual-mode smartphone or PDA; single-mode PDA; PC
"Ease of use and transparency of service using dual-mode phones are the key factors which will drive the adoption of converged fixed mobile services", says Ross Brennan, CEO. "We have been very focused in ensuring our wireless VoIP solutions meet the operator requirements in these areas, which in turn will enable them to deliver compelling new services to their subscribers".

The CiceroPhone smartphone client is available immediately for Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone and PDA devices, according to the company. The Cicero Controller Call Continuity module is scheduled for release in mid-December.
