Mistral Software is shipping a WLAN reference design based on a TI OMAP processor running either Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 5.0. The aptly-named Wireless Reference Design (WRD) integrates four RF modules, including a SyChip WiFi module, and aims to simplify the development of next-generation wireless mobile devices, according to the company.

In addition to the TI OMAP5912 SoC (system-on-chip) processor, the WRD integrates 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM/GPRS, and GPS functions on a small form-factor SBC (single-board computer).

The SBC's SyChip WLAN6100EB WiFi module is intended for use in handheld devices. Its features include advanced power save functions, security features compliant with IEEE 802.11i, QoS (quality of service) traffic prioritization conformant with IEEE 802.11e, and an "advanced signaling interface" offering enhanced co-existence with Bluetooth devices, according to SyChip.

The WRD is similar to Mistral's Navigation Reference Design (NRD) and Rapid Design Kit (RDK), both of which are also based on a TI OMAP5912 running Windows CE, according to the company. The WRD is unique in its primary focus on wireless technologies. Also, the WRD marks the company's complete transition to Windows CE 5.0 and Windows Mobile, Mistral says.

Mistral marketing manager D S Akhila stated, "With the SyChip based WRD we now have not only a technical design but the means by which we can help our customer build their designs. We have been testing throughput and power management and this is where our solution really shines."
