Dashwire has introduced a website that lets users of Windows Mobile devices backup their data to the Web. Unlike phone-to-PC syncing, the backup is done live via a phone's data connection, so all information is said to be available even if a phone is lost.

The company says that all phone content -- contacts, text messages, calls, photos, videos, and phone settings -- is mirrored to a dedicated, private "dashboard" on its website. In a nod to popular "social networking" functionality, users also can establish a public profile and use the website to share photographs of their choice.

Dashwire claims that in addition to having all phone content safely backed up, users may find it easier to manipulate information using the Web page than on the phone. Contacts can be added, edited, or deleted, as can photos. The site even incorporates an integrated, online photo editor, according to the company.

With supported phones -- most but not all Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices are compatible, the company claims -- users can also modify settings such as ringtones, wallpapers, speed dial settings, and Internet favorites. The new settings are then communicated back to the phone, which makes the requested changes.

Dashwire also allows users to send and receive SMS messages, bringing them "the convenience of instant messaging." An SMS auto-fill function remembers frequently-used names and numbers.

According to Ford Davidson, CEO and founder of Dashwire, "The potential around web-connected phones and services is the biggest opportunity in the wireless industry. Mobile phone buyers are excited by the possibilities of their phones only to find that they cant easily gain access to the rich features ... and the instruction manual isnt cutting it."

The Dashwire service is currently free, though the company provided no information about whether this will be permanent. of course, users also need to have an unlimited data plan with their carriers.

For more details, and to check on which Windows Mobile phones are currently compatible, see the company's website, here. Currently, the company says it is adding only a "small number of users per day."
