Microsoft has published a webcast that explains how to make Windows Mobile applications "location aware" on GPS-equipped devices. Viewable online now, the webcast is the tenth in a promised series of 24 devoted to Windows Mobile 6.1 software development.

The one-hour program is said to have been recorded on Wednesday in Barcelona at Microsoft's TechEd EMEA conference, and is presented by the company's usual dynamic duo -- Microsoft community program manager Constanze Roman (left), and long-time embeddded developer Maarten Struys (right). According to Microsoft's MSDN website, "24 Hours of Windows Mobile application development: Windows Mobile location awareness live from TechEd EMEA" shows how to add location awareness to applications running on GPS-equipped devices.

In particular, the webcast focuses on use of the GPS Intermediate Driver, which allows accessing information from inside managed applications. It also discusses how developers can use the FakeGPS utility to test location-enabled applications, without needing access to physical GPS hardware, according to Microsoft.

Like the first nine webcasts in this promised 24-part series, "24 Hours of Windows Mobile application development: Windows Mobile location awareness live from TechEd EMEA" features a mix of PowerPoint slides (above), plus video demonstrating the use of Visual Studio 2008 and the Windows Mobile device emulator. The downloadable presentation is viewable in its entirety using Internet Explorer and Microsoft's Office Live Meeting software, as shown below.

Other recent offerings in the "24 Hours" series have included guides to automated mobile code testing, .NET Compact Framework 3.5 Power Toys, using Pocket Outlook functionality, developing "battery-friendly" applications and programming for different form factors.
