Microsoft has announced a free webinar aimed at those interested in developing point of service (POS) applications. The live event, titled "Windows Embedded for Point of Service and Retail Solutions," will be presented by Sean Liming (pictured) on Jan. 24, at 1 PM PST.

Presenter Liming is a managing director at SJJ Embedded Micro Solutions, and a Microsoft eMVP who has written books on WEPOS, Windows XP Embedded, and the .NET Micro Framework.

According to Microsoft, the 60-minute online presentation will cover Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS), detailing the differences between it and Windows XP Embedded. It will also discuss how to develop POS for .NET applications that interface to various POS devices. Calling POS for .NET the "core solution of the embedded offering," the company said the webinar will walk through the steps of creating a POS for .NET application in Visual Studio.

As inducements for prospective attendees, Microsoft said that viewers of the event will be entered in a drawing for one of the company's Zune digital media players. Additional drawings will give away books and toolkits by Liming.

        WEPOS and POS for .NET

First unveiled in 2004, WEPOS is claimed by Microsoft to have been the first POS software platform to support peripheral plug-and-play functionality, the feature most requested by retailers, it said. Additionally, the platform has strong default security settings, including a "hardened" Internet Explorer browser, Windows Logon user authentication, and buffer overrun protection. Minimized operating system code size also reduces system vulnerabilities, according to the company.

POS for .NET is a .NET class library that implements the retail industry's Unified Point of Service (UnifiedPOS) standards for the .NET platform. It is touted by Microsoft as providing .NET applications with a simple and consistent interface for communicating with POS peripheral devices.
