Microsoft's "Device Management and Security Team" has published two whitepapers detailing Windows Mobile security issues. The free, online documents, entitled "Security Considerations for Windows Mobile Messaging in the Enterprise" and "Security Model for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6," provide an in-depth look at the Windows Mobile security model.

Security Considerations for Windows Mobile Messaging in the Enterprise

According to this whitepaper, "One of the most difficult tasks facing enterprise network administrators is finding methods and technologies that can help prevent malicious attacks on their systems from sources located both inside and outside the corporate firewall. Securing servers, client computers, and mobile devices becomes even more vital as workers and contractors connect from multiple wired and wireless networks that may employ varying levels of security features."

Specific topics included in this document are:
        • Security Risks in the Mobile Enterprise
        • The Windows Mobile Security Architecture
        • Security Considerations on the Device
        • Security Considerations on the Exchange Server
        • Security Considerations within the Corporate Network
Security Model for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6

According to this whitepaper, "Windows Mobile-powered devices employ a combination of security policies, roles, and certificates to address configuration, remote access, and application execution. Security policies provide the flexibility to control access to the device. If a user or application is allowed access, security policies then control the boundaries for actions, access and functionality."

Specific topics included in this document are:
        • Security Policies for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6
        • Security Roles for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6
        • Additional Security Settings
        • Certificates for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6
        • Security Services for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6
        • Cryptographic Services and FIPS Compliance in Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile
The information provided in these documents is detailed and thorough, and Microsoft recommends that developers and IT administrators read them both.

"Security Considerations for Windows Mobile Messaging in the Enterprise" is available here, and "Security Model for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6" is available here. Access to both documents is free.
