Socket Communications has released a graphical software application for Wi-Fi-enabled Windows Mobile devices. Wi-Fi Companion aids users in detecting hotspots, setting up and monitoring a connection, performing basic site management functions, viewing access points, and determining the strength of a wireless connection, according...

The program determines the presence and level of wireless coverage, whether security is enabled, and the type of security used, Socket says. In addition, the program is claimed to integrate with all WLAN security protocols supported by Windows Mobile, including WPA, WPA-PSK, 802.1x, 40/128-bit WEP, and Open. An Integrated Profile Configuration Capability enables users to quickly identify available networks and configure for connection, and a "connection persistence capability" continuously manages and maintains the connection, the company adds.

The ping and trace route diagnostic tools simplify troubleshooting of network problems, according to the company. Ping checks connectivity with other devices. Trace route, shown here, checks each hop in the connection to the Internet. The package also automatically manages the WLAN power save setting to maximize the device's battery life.

Wi-Fi companion appears to be an upgrade of WLAN Tools Mobile Edition introduced by Socket last September. Socket says the program is compatible with HP, ASUS, and Dell Pocket PCs with built-in WLAN. It is available for download from the company's website, or from Handango for about $25. A 14-day free trial is available here.
