The Wi-Fi Alliance trade association is going to begin certification of products supporting the new 802.11g wireless spec., which handles a data rate of 54 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11g is currently in draft form.

"We have already started development of the Wi-Fi certification program for IEEE 802.11g products even though the standard is not finalized, said Dennis Eaton, Chairman of the Wi-Fi Alliance.

The big reason: 802.11g products are going to have to have backward compatibility with 802.11b products.

Products that pass testing will be eligible for a certication label once the IEEE passes the final 802.11g spec.
