        Windows CE 6.0 BSP supports PXA270 reference design

        Direct Insight, a U.K.-based VAR (value-added reseller) has developed a Windows CE 6.0 BSP (board-support package) for the XScale PXA270-based Sandgate II reference design from Sophia Systems. The Sandgate II includes all of the functions necessary for developing handheld devices, according to Sophia.

        Claimed features and specifications of the Sandgate II include:
        • Processor -- PXA270, clock not specified
        • Memory -- 64 or 128 MB of SDRAM, 64 MB flash
        • Display -- 4-inch TFT LCD, 640x480, 18-bit color with touchscreen
        • I/O ports:
          • 10/100 BaseT Ethernet
          • USB 2.0 client
          • USB 1.1 client and host
          • RS232-C
          • IrDA
        • Audio:
          • AC97 -- 20-bit stereo codec with programmable sample and input/output gain control
          • line in and mic in jacks
          • stereo headphone/line out jack with bass/treble control
          • headphone driver with short circuit protection
        • Expansion:
          • SD/MMC socket
          • CompactFlash socket
          • SIM card
          • expansion bus
        • JTAG port and connector for in-circuit emulators
        • Dimensions -- 6,5 x 4.9 inches (165 x 125 mm)
        The Sandgate II can be supplied with one of several debuggers from Sophia Systems for on-chip debugging, according to Direct Insight.

        Stuart Tindall, Direct Insight's sales and marketing director, stated, "Microsoft has made the beta version of Windows CE 6.0 and the corresponding tools widely available prior to the planned November release, and so there is a need for target hardware for users planning early adoption of the new operating system."

        Availability

        The new Windows CE 6.0 BSP is supplied with complete source code, and the full board schematics are provided as PDF files, according to Direct Insight.

        The BSP appears to be available now. However, the company's on-line store describes the Sandgate II as including a Windows CE 5.0 BSP. Pricing is listed as GBP 3,495 (roughly $6,500).
