IGEL Technology is claiming to have redefined the entry-level segment of the thin client market with its introduction of a Windows CE device priced at $249 and touting low total cost of ownership (TCO).

The IGEL-132 CE Smart comes with a remote management suite that "optimizes the central administration capability of clients, resulting in a dramatic decrease of total cost of ownership in the IT infrastructure," according to IGEL.

Built around a 200 MHz embedded processor, 64 MB of RAM, and 32 MB of Flash memory, the IGEL-132 CE Smart also provides a broader feature set than other entry-level thin clients, despite its low cost, IGEL claims. The device provides multi-session capability, for example, and comes equipped with the latest communication protocols such as Citrix ICA and RDP clients, accommodating both Microsoft terminal services and Citrix Presentation Server.

The IGEL-132 CE Smart also includes a terminal emulation suite, an integrated authentication protocol for secure access to host applications, and "extensive" network support, according to IGEL, including DSL, VPN, and USB-WLAN, "with which branch offices can be efficiently integrated into the IT infrastructure and centrally managed at low cost."

The company lists the following hardware features and specifications for the IGEL-132 CE Smart:
        • Processor -- SiS550 CPU, at 200 MHz
        • Memory:
          • RAM -- 64 MB, expandable to 512 MB
          • Flash -- 32 MB CompactFlash (optionally expandable)
        • Display -- VESA monitor support, up to 1280 x 1024 resolution
        • Audio:
          • AC97 Codec
          • 16-bit stereo FM synthesizer
          • built-in loudspeaker, stereo output jack
        • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port
        • Other I/O ports:
          • RS-232C serial port with baud rates up to 115.2 Kbps
          • Bi-directional parallel printer port
          • 2 USB ports (available on front panel)
          • PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports
