        Windows CE handheld captures data

        A new handheld from Symbol Technologies, based on an XScale processor running Windows CE 4.2, is a light industrial tool for mobile bar code scanning and data entry applications. The rugged, value-priced Symbol MC1000 targets applications in the retail, manufacturing, warehouse, and logistics industries.

        Symbol's MC1000 combines a high degree of ruggedness with "a highly ergonomic and lightweight design," according to the company. Measuring only 24.46 cubic inches and weighing just 7.23 ounces, it is spec'd to withstand a 4-foot drop to concrete and up to 500 1.65-foot tumbles. The mobile computer also boasts an IP-54 sealing rating for withstanding water and dust intrusion. Operating temperature range is -10 to +50 degree C.

        The new handheld is equipped with 32 MB of RAM, along with 32 MB of Flash memory, plus an SD card slot for expansion. A 2.2-inch LCD screen is provided for readout, and input is handled through a laser bar-code scanner and 21-key keypad.
