According to Fujitsu, the new iPAD is positioned to support multiple customer-facing applications such as guided-selling, inventory look-up and price verification, "line-busting," and even sidewalk sales. The unit includes a built-in laser scanner and magnetic card reader plus support for VoIP, eliminating the need for a seperate pager or mobile phone, according to the company.

Fujitsu lists the following key features and specifications for the iPAD:
        • Processor -- PXA270 at 520 MHz
        • Memory -- 64 MB SDRAM, 64 MB flash, 64 MB user accessible "fixed flash" storage
        • Display -- 3.5-inch QVGA TFT LCD with LED backlight
        • Audio -- built-in speaker and microphone, headset jack
        • Peripherals:
          • magnetic card reader
          • SE955 hardware decoded laser scanner -- scans all major barcodes including RSS-14
        • Expansion -- none
        • Wireless:
          • 802.11b/g WiFi
          • Bluetooth v1.2
        • Dimensions -- 3.5 x 7.0 x 1.5 inches (84 x 187 x 23 mm)
        • Weight -- 11.4 oz (340 grams)
Software, firmware, and operating system upgrades for the new iPAD model can be done wirelessly and remotely using Wavelink Avalanche, Fujitsu says. The remote management function also allows users to perform preventive maintenance before a unit fails.

Vernon Slack, of Fujitsu's customer marketing for mobile solutions group, stated, "We've packed many powerful new features into this iPAD. It sports a faster processor, more memory, a brighter screen with longer battery life, and a faster radio. Additionally, it addresses environmental concerns through RoHS compliance."

The new iPAD is apparently available now. Pricing details were not disclosed.
