        Windows CE powered Gizmondo game console ships in the UK

        GPRS communications -- runs Microsoft's Windows CE embedded operating system.

        The Gizmondo device boasts a 2.8-inch TFT color screen and is powered by a 400MHz ARM9 applications processor along with a 128-bit GoForce 3D 4500 Nvidia graphics accelerator. The interactive, pager-sized gadget provides "cutting-edge gaming", multimedia messaging, an MP3 music player, MPEG 4 movie playing capability, a digital camera, and a GPRS network link to allow wide-area network gaming, according to the company. Additionally, it contains a GPS chip that enables location-based services, is equipped with Bluetooth for use in multi-player gaming, and accepts MMC card accessories.

        The combination of GPS and GPRS enables multiplayer games that incorporate the player's physical location. "As the newcomers, we've had to play many cards close to our chest, but this is about to change. Over the coming weeks, there will be a series of Gizmondo announcements, as we go to market," said Carl Freer, Managing Director, Gizmondo Europe.

        Included in with the Windows CE-based device will be a "contract-free" SIM card, battery charger, headphones, battery, and a USB cable, making the device ready to use straight out of the box, according to Gizmondo.
