Thales has introduced a new handheld GPS receiver for geographic information system (GIS) and other data collection and mapping applications, that it says "sets a new standard for performance and affordability." The device is based on an ARM920T processor equipped with 64MB SDRAM, running Windows CE.

Claimed to be priced substantially lower than competing systems, the MobileMapper CE GPS receiver is said to offer an "impressive array of high-performance features," including real-time, sub-meter GPS positioning, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, removable SD card memory, and an all-day removable battery that make it attractive for a wide variety of GIS data collection and mapping applications. The unit also boasts a QVGA resolution, 256K color, "daylight readable" TFT LCD display with a resistive touch panel, and achieves real-time, sub-meter positioning accuracy through a technique known as "DGPS corrections."

Thales says the MobileMapper CE is designed to operate in harsh environments where standard "consumer-grade" pocket computing devices such as PDAs and other less rugged GPS receivers can easily be damaged. Additionally, the device can withstand a 4.9 foot (1.5 m) drop to concrete, and remains waterproof even when totally immersed in water.
