Prolificx has released an upgrade to its Windows CE-based open hardware platform for telematics and M2M applications. The Vector 300DM is functionally equivalent to its predecessor, the 300FM, but adds a backup communications channel via...

The 300DM is "extremely" useful in long-haul trucking and other applications that require maintaining communications outside of cellular coverage areas, according to Prolificx. The unit uses a least cost routing algorithm that primarily sends data on the cellular network, but when outside of cellular coverage range, it can either store messages for later transmission, or in the case of high priority messages, send them via the satellite network.

Prolificx lists the following key features and specifications for the Vector 300DM:
        • Windows CE 5.0 plus .NET Compact Framework
        • Intel PXA270 XScale Processor
        • 64 MD SDRAM, 32 MB flash
        • 20 channel high sensitivity SiRF STAR III GPS receiver
        • GSM/GPRS communications
        • DS100 ORBCOMM modem from Stellar Satellite Communications
        • Bluetooth
        • USB host and slave
        • Digital and analog I\O
        • 3 axis accelerometer
        • CAN, J1708, RS485 and RS232 interface
        • SD Card
        • Supports 12 and 24 volt automotive power systems with on-board battery backup and low power wakeup modes
ORBCOMM describes itself as a satellite data communications provider focused exclusively on M2M (machine-to-machine) communications. The service is said to provide low cost, reliable, two-way data communications services around the world through a global network of 30 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites and accompanying ground infrastructure. Messages ranging from six bytes to several kilobytes can be transmitted in near real-time, the company says.

According to Gareth Evans, manager of the Prolificx Vector 300 product line, "Adding satellite network communications opens up new opportunities for our customers to operate in areas where cellular coverage cannot be guaranteed."
