The Zypad WL 1000 will be displayed at the Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association's TechNet International Conference held in Washington D.C., according to Parvus.
(Click here for larger image)The WL 1000 is based on a 400 MHz AMD Au1100 MIPS processor with 64 MB each of SDRAM and Flash. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11b/g WiFi with integrated antenna and Bluetooth class 2. The device also incorporates a built-in GPS receiver.
Parvus says the WL 1000 includes a tilt and dead-reckoning system that can determine if a user is motionless or has fallen down, and then transmit a locator beacon after a specified amount of time. The technology, which Parvus says has a patent application pending, is also used to conserve power by placing the unit in standby mode when the user's arm hangs down beside the body. This enhanced power management functionality supports more than 8 hours of usage on a single battery chare, the company claims.
The WL 1000 supports both Windows CE 5.0 and embedded Linux using a 2.6 series kernel. Parvus anticipates applications in emergency search and rescue, healthcare, homeland security, maintenance, law enforcement, logistics, transportation, and defense.
